Breakfast and Race Day - July 29, 2012

On a beautiful summer day 9 bikes and 12 riders congregated at Tim Hortons
in Manotick and headed to Kemptville for breakfast at the Kemptville Family Restaurant. The staff were friendly and the breakfast was very good.

Ride Captain Stu took us to Smiths Falls via scenic Merrickville to the Rolling Thunder Car Show.

Arabella's dream car.

I prefer the red one.

Old ones.

Hot Rods.

Classics.

Hey Stu, I used to have one like this.

Was there ever a garage in which this one could fit?

If you were a certain age, this will bring back memories.

After the car show, we travelled the back roads to Perth and then for a stop at Baldersons, famous for their cheese, Amish goods and excellent ice cream.

We continued via Hwy 511 to Lanark and Calabogie with a stop at the Calabogie Race Track. The 511 is a great motorcycle road with sweeping turns, hills and great new pavement.

Motorcycle races were on this weekend so we watched the events. The ambulance was called out a couple of times to extract some racers who failed to negotiate some of the tight and blind hairpin elevated turns. Some of the guys toured the pits and then were invited to the tower to watch the races from a better vantage point.

Leaning hard into a turn.

On their way to the Pit.

As I entered the pits, I approached a racer who just returned from the track. Even though the straightaways were short, I learned he was hitting speeds of about 250 KPM.

As I looked over his bike I viewed the following markings

I learned that he was a motorcycle patrol officer with the Durham Regional Police Service. He is a former professional motorcycle racer. His police service uses the bike for educational purposes such as safety courses, encouraging bikers to go to the track rather than street racing in the Durham Region and drug education programs etc.

On the way to Arnprior via Hwy 508 I witnessed an extraordinary feat of hand, eye and foot coordination. If I had it on video, it would be a contender for American Funniest Videos. While traveling between 80 to 90 KPM. Our Ride Captain gave the signal of an object ahead in the middle of our driving lane. I was last in line and as the bikes spread, the object appeared to be a stump of wood. When the first couple of bikes swerved around the brown object it moved. In the a split second, Rick D. swiped at it with his left foot. Low and behold, he hooked the object with the toe of his boot and raised it to his left floor board. With his left hand, he reached down and grabbed the object and stuck it under his butt. When we arrived at the Arnprior Tim Hortons. The following photos will first re-enact the foot movement and the second photo will identify the object.

Nice Hat.

We had a few laughs at Tim Hortons/Wendys over some refreshments and food. After the break we headed back to the Ottawa area where each rider peeled off to their respective home.

It was a great ride spread over 10 hours and 360 K. Thanks Stu.

Meat Ride - Watertown, NY - July 20, 2012

Our Ride Captain enticed 13 riders on 10 bikes for a ride to Watertown, NY for a feast of meat at the Texas RoadHouse Restaurant. We all met at, where else, Tim Hortons in Ottawa south. It was a beautiful weather day for riding. Stu took us on a very scenic ride on the back roads via Kemptville,Spencerville and the Ogdensburg bridge to New York state. After we cleared customs, we stopped at the Ogdensburg Walmart for refreshments and a bio break. We parked next to the special parking spots for the local Amish community which were reserved for horse and buggies only.

Putting our stuff back together after the customs stop.

I don't think the horse understood French. Note: The little boy in the Buggy.

We then proceeded through the country side to Watertown where we feasted on what the Texans eat. The food and service were very good and we spent a couple of leisurely hours eating and telling war stories.

This is where they keep the meat.

We crossed the 1000 Islands Bridge into Ontario and took the scenic 1000 Islands Parkway until it ended on Hwy 401. We planned to return to Ottawa prior to nightfall, however we took a detour to Timmies in Brockville where we depleted the Chapter gift card on refreshments. After more tall tales, we returned to the Ottawa area via the 401,416 and 417.

One more stop at Timmies (established in 1964)

Believe it or not we did not have any ice cream. We should be able to make up for that over site on our next ride. We spent approximately 10 hrs and over 400 K along the way.

Mont Tremblant - July 14, 2012

Eight bikes and 11 riders met at Perkins Restaurant and left at 9:45 AM on a very hot day to enjoy a ride to resort town of Mont Tremblant, PQ. We travelled through Quebec via scenic roads. We stopped for refreshments and cooled off in air conditioned venues along the way to Mont Tremblant. St. Hubert BBQ was chosen for lunch. After enjoying a good meal, the cool air and great company, we departed for home. A different route was taken which included a stop for ice cream in Cheneville, Quebec. We arrived in Ottawa around 7:00 PM, said our goodbyes and spit up to our respective homes. The total distance for the ride was 350 Kilometers. The highest temperature reached was either 36C (97F) or 40C (104F) depending if you have faith in Japanese or American technology.

Going To Jail - Kingston. July 7, 2012

Four members met at Tim Hortons in Manotick and left at 9:45 AM for a scenic and leisurely ride on the back roads to Kingston. There, we enjoyed a great meal at Eastside Mario's Restaurant. After lunch we went to the Canadian Penitentiary Museum located across the street from the Kingston Pen. The museum was the former residence of the Warden of the Kingston Pen. There were displays and many artifacts from the history of jailing in Canada. After a self guided tour, the group then travelled along the shoreline of the St. Lawrence River to the picturesque town of Gananoque where ice cream was enjoyed at Dairy Queen. After the cold treat, we continued to Brockville and stopped at the river's edge for a quick stretch and then onto Ottawa to arrive home at 6:30 PM
